Karmanaut is a work in progress. The app isn't built yet and no money is being collected. Where we're up to

Pledges earn karma. Donations don't.

We're not taking money of any kind yet. When we do, there will be two very different ways to give, and it matters that they stay separate.

Where a US$2 pledge goes

97.5% goes to the projects you allocate it to5¢ goes to running costs

Five cents doesn't go far. Card fees alone can cost more than that on a payment this small, and we're still working out how to handle it, perhaps by billing less often. It's also why donations matter.

Two ways to give

The pledge

$2 a month

  • The same for everyone, with no way to give more
  • You choose which projects receive it
  • Earns karma when those projects succeed
  • Starts once the app launches

A donation

Any amount

  • Helps build and run Karmanaut itself
  • Earns zero karma, whatever the amount
  • Earns no badge and no place on the leaderboard
  • Donors are listed only if they'd like to be

That wall between the two is the whole design. If a big donation could buy any standing here, the leaderboard would stop meaning anything.

What donations would pay for

  • Building the app: the feed, question threads, allocation and scoring
  • Legal setup: the right structure to hold and pass on pledged money in many countries
  • Checking results: paying independent local people to go and look
  • Payment fees: so that the $1.95 reaches projects in full

When we start accepting donations, we'll publish what came in and what it was spent on. We're going to be asking charities for this, so we should go first.

Want to help early?

We can't accept donations until the legal foundations are in place, and we won't take money before then. If you'd like to support us when that happens, or you can help now with skills instead of money, say hello.
